Why Supplements?
Today new evidence is suggesting that even if we pile on the fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of fresh fruit juice and milk, and eat fish a couple of times a week, we may not be getting all the nutrients we need.
The Daily Value is the amount the FDA recommends that we adults get every day. Daily Value are established for 24 vitamins and minerals. But researchers and nutrition experts are now suggesting that:
- Minimum levels are not enough for optimum health, additional amounts of many vitamins and minerals may help avoid chronic conditions and diseases.
- We need nutrients beyond those 24 vitamins and minerals because the food we eat are made up of hundreds, even thousands, of different nutrients, and science is just now learning about “new” nutrients’ roles in our bodies.
The food we eat may have “faded”. For millenia, human beings ate fruits and vegetables that they picked just before cooking, if they were cooked at all. But today, even if we eat many servings of fruits and vegetable each day, we might not get enough of the nutrients we need. For example: Fresh-picked green beans lose 40% of their vitamin C within 3 days of harvest.
To help fill in the gaps between what’s in the foods you eat and the nutrition your body needs for optimal health, supplements are the answer. Choose supplements that are standardized for potency, and that offer you nutrients beyond the basic 24 vitamins and minerals.
